OUR TEAM - CARING FOR THE ELDERLY

HISTORY

Both partners worked in the UK as Carers themselves after graduating from university with social work and psychology degrees respectively. Having realised that South Africa had a number of nursing agencies, focusing mainly on the physical care of patients rather than the more holistic approach to care, they decided to open a home care agency. The agency would offer their clients a service encompassing all the aspects enabling them to remain comfortably at home.
They started this agency in 1996 at a dining room table with a telephone, some stationery and a car each!
Eventually the partners realised that a secretary was essential (especially for cups of tea).  The Agency has frown into a well equipped staff of 8 who manage approximately 160 carers.
 

• Director

  • Diana Kane – Berman (B.A.Psych.Hons) UCT/UNISA
    Di has studied psychology and worked as a medical secretary, credit controller, an admin officer at Groote Schuur Hospital and as a Carer herself in the UK.
    
     

• Director

  • Gill Sharwood (B.Soc.Sci.Social Work Hons. ) Rhodes.
    Gill is a qualified Social Worker. She has worked in the UK as a Carer, and as a Social Worker in Port Shepstone (Mbango Home Care) and Pietermaritzburg (PADCA)
    
    
     

• Care - Manager

  • Noreen is a Registered Nurse, has a certificate in coma communication and is an aromatherapist.
    
    She is involved in dealing with new enquiries, Client assessments and follow up home visits. She supervises the Carers in the Client's homes, offering guidance and resolving  problems.
    
    Noreen liases between Client and office staff to ensure the suitable placement of Carers with Clients, taking into account both the medical and personal needs of each Client.
    
     

• Care - Senior Care Co-ordinator

  • Karen is the Care Co-ordinator in charge of organizing the care for our Clients and setting up schedules for the Carers. Karen ensures that the data base is constantly updated and that the after-hours staff has all the relevant information.
    
    She is involved in visiting our Clients to ensure that care is running smoothly.
    
     

• Recruitment Officer/Care Co-ordinator

  • Glynis heads up our recruitment division and carefully screens our Carers to ensure that we employ only the most suitable ladies.
    
    Glynis assists with new enquiries and will offer valuable advice on the various care options. She works hand in hand with Karen co-ordinating care.
    
    Both Karen and Glynis serve as back-up to our after hours staff.
    
     

• Financial Manager

  • Helen Ferguson is responsible for the monthly accounts, the payroll and all other financial administration in the business. She has 22 years experience in Financial admin. She is also a Registered Nurse.
    
    
     

• Financial Assistant

  • Debbie Grouwstra is Helen’s able assistant, having had 19 years experience in bookkeeping. Debbie works flexitime. She is also a Registered Nurse.
    
    
     

• Ruth Hanekom – Secretary

  • Ruth is our friendly receptionist. She is the first person you will speak to when you call our office and she will direct you to the relevant department.
    
    She capably assists all departments with administrative duties and provides our Carers with back-up support.
     

   

• After Hours Call Staff

  • Trish Holgate and Michelle Thompson are in charge of the after hours emergency phone service.
     

  • Trish is a qualified Social Worker who runs her own practice and does sessional work at the Parent Centre.
     

  • Michelle also does sessional work at the Parent Centre and works for a NGO called Youth with a Mission.
    She has worked as a carer and has trained in Basic Life Support.
